The vases were born out of an inclination to work more spontaneously with wood. I was driven to create pieces that stirred more emotion than the angular and engineered work of my furniture.
It was difficult initially to produce anything that could live as pure form, and I felt compelled to maintain a usefulness to the objects. But over time it became natural to soften the line between functional object and sculpture. I have always appreciated small objects—pieces that don’t require much space—and working at this scale allows me to become deeply aware of each contour.
